Bei Crimson Veil handelt es sich um eine Progressive Metal-Band aus dem Vereinigten Königreich und «Hex» ist ihr Debütalbum. Während 56 Minuten bieten Crimson Veil einen interessanten und fesselnden Hybrid-Stil, den für Progfans, zu hören sich wirklich lohnt.
Die neun Tracks sind Progressiver Metal, der mit ätherischen Klanglandschaften, unheimlicher Atmosphäre und avantgardistischen Ausdrucksformen gespickt ist. Der Sound ist elektronisch veredelt und mit Violine, Cello oder Harfe angereichert, hat aber dennoch ein Herz aus metallischem Feuer, das hell brennt. Das Konzept von «Hex» ist strukturiert und vielschichtig, schrullig und eigenwillig, während es sich an starke Songwriting-Techniken hält, die das breite Spektrum von Talent und Fähigkeit der Band optimal nutzen. Die Songs sind durchdacht und verstehen es, Atmosphäre, Gefühl, Dynamik und Struktur zu nutzen, um Lieder zu schaffen, die einen gewissen Eindruck hinterlassen.
Leadsängerin Mishkin Fitzgerald wechselt von cleanem Gesang, der von berührenden Emotionen durchdrungen ist (der primäre Stil), zu dunklem Gebrüll, das hart und bösartig ist. Die Stimme der Sängerin ist geprägt durch langjähriges kirchliches Musicaltraining, ist vielseitig und hat eine gute Bandbreite, die sowohl anmutige Zerbrechlichkeit als auch schroffe, feurige Wut ausdrücken kann. «Hex» ist ein Album, das für mich persönlich zu experimentell und zu ruhig ausgefallen ist, dennoch ist es von eindrucksvollen Bildern durchdrungen, gefühlsbetont und mit scharfen Hooks geschmückt.
Je öfter man es anhört, desto mehr Geheimnisse und Schätze lassen sich auf dieser Platte entdecken. Der Vierer um Frontfrau Fitzgerald, Gitarrist und Bassist Garry Mitchell, Hana Piranha (Violine, Cello und Harfe) sowie Anna Mylee (Drums) hat ein starkes Album produziert, das als ein ausgeklügeltes und ausgefeiltes Beispiel für zeitgenössischen progressiven Metal steht, der die Bedeutung eines festen gefühlsbetonten Fundaments kennt. Fans von progressivem Material sollten sich «Hex» unbedingt anhören.
