Nightwishs neues Album «Yesterwynde» ist nicht bloss ein Album, sondern eine Erfahrung, die herausfordert und fesselt. Seit ihrem letzten Studioalbum «Human :II: Nature» sind über vier Jahre vergangen, doch nun hat das Warten ein Ende, denn das zehnte Studioalbum der Band hat das Licht der Welt erblickt.
Wie im Vorfeld erwartet, ist «Yesterwynde» keine leicht zu verdauende Platte. Das Eröffnungsstück ist schon eher untypisch für ein Nightwish-Album, denn es fehlt die Explosivität oder Eingängigkeit. Dafür beginnt es mit einem Chor, Akustikgitarre und Uilleann Pipes. Man darf sich aber nicht vom ersten Song täuschen lassen, denn bereits «An Ocean Of Strange Islands» macht schnell klar, warum dieses Album als das härteste in der Diskografie der Band angepriesen wurde. Das fast 10-minütige Kunstwerk ist das längste des Albums und weist alle Nightwish-Elemente auf. Massive Gitarrenriffs, ein dröhnendes Orchester und kraftvoller Gesang! «The Antikythera Mechanism» macht da weiter, wo sein Vorgänger aufgehört hat.
Die vorab veröffentlichten Singles «The Day Of...» und «Perfume Of The Timeless» folgen direkt nacheinander. Aufgrund der beiden Tracks wurde das Album bereits im Vorfeld als zu weich, zu experimentell und schlecht abgemischt verschrien. Sie gehören vielleicht nicht zu den prickelndsten Songs des Albums, fügen sich jedoch im Gesamtkonzept gut ein. «Sway» ist einer der leichteren Tracks und erlaubt es Troy Donockley, mit seinem Gesang zu glänzen.
«The Children Of 'Ata» hat eine Art 80er Jahre-Vibe, der durch kraftvolle Gitarrenriffs und beeindruckende Orchestrierung ausgeglichen werden soll. Ein Highlight der Platte ist das aussergewöhnliche «Spider Silk». Der Song zeigt die grosse Bandbreite, von einer jazzigen Atmosphäre bis zu einem explosiven Refrain, von bekannten Nightwish-Trademarks bis zu völlig neuen Elementen. Floor Jansens stimmliche Leistung ist auf dem gesamten Album extrem stark, aber bei diesem Song übertrifft sie sich selbst. Das vorletzte Stück, «The Weave», besticht durch abwechslungsreichen Einsatz des Orchesters und durch die Verwendung eines bekannten Riffmusters. Bassist Jukka Koskinen, der erst 2022 offiziell zur Band stiess, ist in diesem Stück besonders präsent. Im Gegensatz zu den letzten Nightwish-Alben schliesst «Yesterwynde» nicht mit einem 20-minütigen Epos, sondern mit dem sanften und schönen «Lanternlight» ab. Dieser führt das Album zu der gleichen Ruhe zurück, mit der die Platte begann. «Yesterwynde» ist überraschend, und fordert den Hörer sowohl thematisch als auch kompositorisch heraus.
Das Album ist der Beweis dafür, dass Nightwish sich auch nach fast 30 Jahren immer noch neu erfinden können, ohne ihren typischen Sound zu opfern. Die zwölf Songs zeigen nicht nur die Songwriter-Qualitäten eines Tuomas Holopainen, sondern sind auch Beweis dafür, mit was für einer grossartigen Gruppe von Musikern er sich umgibt. «Yesterwynde» erschliesst sich nicht beim ersten Hördurchgang, aber seine Kernaussage ist nach einem Durchlauf klar.
